Photo: Barehanded BLS pal catches Alex Gordon homer on the fly

One of the little-known benefits of running Big League Stew is that my friends get free posts when they catch home runs the tough way (and an AP photog is there to prove it).

Yes, that's my old Kansas City Star partner in crime Derek Prater (white shirt) making a successul play on Alex Gordon's(notes) fourth inning home run against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. You'll notice that he didn't need a glove to catch it clean.

I'd expect nothing less from the man who once had to interview a very angry Robert Fick in the aftermath of the infamous Mike Sweeney-Jeff Weaver fight.

"Very slight bruising on my right hand today," Derek reports. "Totally worth it."

I'd say. And though someone said the ball is worth about $1.31, I'd have to disagree. I mean, it's Alex Gordon. That's a limited edition!

Anyway, a big congrats goes out to DP. My family still talks about the day my old man nabbed a Gorman Thomas batting practice homer in the old Comiskey Park bleachers sans glove.

He doesn't even have a Big League Stew post, to prove it either.
