The most impressive thing about Kyle Orton's(notes) season thus far is actually not the fact that he's on pace to throw for 26,000 yards (or whatever it is). Instead, the remarkable thing about Orton's crazy year is that he's piling up numbers with receivers that you would've paid to not own in 2009.
Eddie Royal(notes) already has 25 receptions after totaling just 37 last season. Jabar Gaffney(notes) has 22 catches for 240 yards. And Brandon Lloyd(notes) — BRANDON LLOYD, an eight-year vet, heretofore a perfectly league-average receiver — is somehow on pace for 100 receptions and 1,816 yards.
On-pace numbers are of course ridiculous this early in the year, and most of us would still trade two Brandon Lloyds for one Randy Moss(notes) if given the chance. But let's nonetheless acknowledge the fine work by Orton and his receiving corps through Week 4. Lloyd was targeted 18 times last Sunday, the second-highest total in the league, and Orton gave him a few chances in the end zone (none successful).
The Broncos' schedule isn't too inviting over the next two weeks (at BAL, vs. NYJ), but there's no reason to think they'll stop throwing. This team is dead-last in the league in rushing. Enjoy the Orton-to-Lloyd magic as long as it lasts. (Prediction: Longer than Volek-to-Bennett, not quite Mitchell-to-Moore). And please use the target leader board responsibly…
